Important Customer Notice – Updated 6th July 2020
We understand that the last 3-4 months have caused a great deal of distress and uncertainty for many of our customers whose weddings have been affected by ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. We have been working hard to help support customers through these unprecedented and difficult times and we wanted to provide you with an update following the recent announcements regarding the easing of certain restrictions and the guidance published by the UK Government on small weddings.
As such, we have updated our COVID-19 FAQs, which are available on the link below and also can be downloaded here as a PDF.
Latest Government position on Weddings

This is a fast-moving situation and the guidance and various restrictions in place are being reviewed constantly by the UK government. The government has recently announced that small weddings and civil partnerships will be permitted to take place from the 4th July. The latest guidance can be found on the Gov.uk website.

Whilst this is clearly good news for couples who want to get married it is clear from the guidance that many couples wedding plans will continue to be affected due to the various restrictions still in place. If your wedding is not what you had planned, then in the first instance you should speak to your venue and suppliers to see what they are willing to do to accommodate you. We expect venues and suppliers to want to help you and to work with you to find an alternative solution.

We are doing everything we can to help customers through this difficult situation and are responding to claims and queries as quickly as possible. However, due to the continued increase in the number of claims and queries it is taking us longer than usual to respond. So, we thank you in advance for your understanding and continued patience.
Have a question or need some help?
If you have general questions in relation to Coronavirus and how this may affect your wedding and what the terms of the policy cover then please read or download the COVID-19 FAQs first and before you contact us. If after reading the FAQs you still require assistance then we request that you contact us by email at customerservice@emeraldlife.co.uk. If your query is urgent and you need to speak to someone then you can call us on 0330 113 7109.
Making a change to your policy
If you need to request any changes to your policy such as amending the dates or details of your wedding, changing your address etc, please email us at customerservice@emeraldlife.co.uk.
Making a claim
Cover for cancellation of your wedding due to coronavirus (COVID-19) depends upon the individual circumstances of your claim. If you need to cancel or postpone your wedding due to COVID-19 then in the first instance, to ensure any financial loss is kept to a minimum, please contact your wedding venue and suppliers, as soon as possible to discuss your options. Your suppliers should want to help you and may allow you to make alternative arrangements to rearrange your wedding to another date (if necessary) at no additional cost, or they may offer you a refund.
Before you make a final decision regarding your wedding arrangements you should contact our claims department by email at weddingclaims@emeraldlife.co.uk. This is because we want to ensure that any financial loss you suffer is covered under the terms of the policy and that any losses are not recoverable from any other source (e.g. your venue or wedding suppliers, your credit card company etc). In other words, you have an obligation to mitigate your financial loss and we can assist you with this.
Please note, due to the ongoing situation we are experiencing extremely high call volumes and as such we ask that you only contact us by phone if you require immediate and urgent assistance with a claim, in which case you can contact us by phone on 0333 234 3723. To submit a claim please download our claim form here. Please note we are not able to confirm cover until we have received a completed claim form and assessed the individual circumstances of your claim.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

+- Do I need wedding insurance?

Whether you really need wedding insurance or not comes down to how much is at risk and needs protecting.

In other words, how much will your wedding cost and is any of that spend covered by exisiting arrangements? Remember that if you have paid with a credit card for anything costing between £100 and £30,000 then you should be able to claim your money back from your credit card provider, using section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This applies even if just the deposit was put on your card.

Why do I need to insure my wedding?

Weddings can be incredibly expensive events - and you want everything to be perfect. There are lots of factors outside your control that can impact them. So it makes perfect sense to insure your big day. Our wedding policy covers damage to clothing, financial failure of services suppliers, adverse weather, illness AND if any services supplier refuses to provide you a product or service because you are having a same-sex wedding, or for any other reason that is prohibited under the Equalities Act – just about everything we can think of where you might need protection for on your big day.

+-

Are all types of weddings, celebrations, blessings, and renewals of vows covered?

The definition of ‘Wedding’ is a ceremony which creates a contract of marriage legally enforceable within the UK or a civil partnership registration or ceremony". If your celebration is outside of that definition, for example, a blessing as part of a religious ceremony, or a renewal of vows, then please call us. We hope to have a positive response for you within 24 hours.

 How much do weddings cost?

Research by bridal magazine Hitch has crunched down the numbers to see how much weddings cost in 2017.

Brides and grooms are now spending an average of £27,161. That was a dramatic rise of £2000 since 2016.

Wedding venue hire is naturally the most expensive cost at £4,354, even more than the honeymoon that comes in second at £3,630. The average cost of wedding dresses was £1209.

+- What isn't covered by Wedding Insurance?

You can't make a claim for a situation that you already knew about. Unfortunately that includes medical conditions that you worry could get in the way of your ceremony.

We also don’t cover cold feet if either partner changes their mind or if you decide you cannot afford to go ahead with your plans.

Remember that standard wedding insurance doesn’t cover your honeymoon so you will probably want to take out some travel insurance to cover that which we are pleased to offer here at Emerald.

Many insurers allow you to add extras for expenses such as marquee cover, ceremonial swords cover, public liability cover and weddings overseas. At Emerald our wedding insurance already provides worldwide cover but we include marquee insurance and ceremonial swords as optional extras.

+- Can I take out wedding insurance for a civil partnership ceremony?

Yes, at Emerald Life we include civil partnerships in our wedding insurance. We were also the first UK insurance provider to allow the prefix “Mx” for non-binary and transgender people, or indeed anyone who would rather identify that way.

+-

When should I take out Wedding Insurance?

Within reason, as soon as you choose the date of the special day. If you have already incurred expenses for your wedding, these things will typically be covered from the date you take out your insurance.

+-

What level of cover do I need?

We are unable to give advice as to whether a certain level of cover suits your specific needs. Generally speaking, the larger the wedding and reception, the more you should think about taking out a wedding insurance policy. Emerald has a range of options to suit every occasion. Have a look at what we offer and if you have any questions, please get in touch with one of our team on email or 0330 113 7109.

+- How do I make a claim? What if I think I may need to make a claim?

To make a claim, or if you are thinking of making a claim, click here or email: weddingclaims@emeraldlifeclaims.co.uk or call: 0333 234 3723.
As you will appreciate, the unprecedented nature of Coronavirus (Covid-19) and the need for restrictions of gatherings has had a significant impact on both the wedding industry as a whole and more specifically your planned wedding.
As a result, we are receiving an extremely high volume of enquiries and claims from customers, and our usual response time has been affected. We sincerely apologise for this, however, please be assured that we are working through all claims and enquiries thoroughly, and as quickly as we possibly can.
If your wedding is impacted by Covid-19 and if you have not already done so, we encourage you to approach your wedding providers (venue and all suppliers) to discuss rearrangement options for a new wedding date, as we will need to know your rearrangement options before any claim can be fully considered.
We appreciate your continued patience while we all work through this.

+-

Does my wedding and reception have to happen on the same day?

You can have your reception up to 21 days after the wedding in our standard policies. If you need more time between your ceremony and reception or are having multiple weddings or receptions - no problem. Please give us a call on 0330 113 7109 and we’ll try to put that cover in place for you.
